While on vacations I love getting out of the city hub and exploring the rest of the area. Some of my favorite things to do are just an hour away from the New Orleans!
Visiting a plantation is a must while in Louisiana and my favorites are Oak Alley Plantation and Laura Plantation. Afterwards, if you are up for a leisurely stroll along a boardwalk while viewing alligators, I would suggest the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve.

Oak Alley Plantation is one of the most well-known plantations with live oak trees lining the drive toward a gorgeous Creole style house. The house tour was breathtaking as you made your way from room to room. This tour is geared more toward the plantation owners and the family living in the “big house”.
The Laura Plantation is centered around a beautiful yellow and blue Creole style home. This plantation tour dives deeper into the individuals working the plantation and their living quarters rather than centered on the plantation owners. I would definitely recommend this tour!
Just 20 miles from New Orleans is a beautiful park and preserve with alligators only a couple feet away. The preserve is huge so I recommend walking the Barataria Preserve which consists of a walking path and a boardwalk over a bayou. Keep an eye out for wildlife in the water and definitely stay on all walking paths. Here is the Barataria Preserve trail map and my favorite trails are the Bayou Coquille Trail to the Marsh Overlook Trail.
